Xubuntu CD - Alternate Edition

"Linux on a website aimed specifically at end users?"  Xubuntu Linux is here because it is the easiest Linux we have found to install (from only 1 CD).

Desktop CD

Using the Desktop CD you can try Xubuntu without changing your computer at all, and install it permanently later if you wish.  This type of CD is what most people will want to use.

You need 192 MB RAM to run the Live CD or 128 MB RAM to install.  The Alternate Install CD only requires you to have 64 MB RAM at install time.  To install Xubuntu, you need 1.5 GB of free space on your hard disk.  Once installed, Xubuntu can run with 192 MB (or even just 128 MB) RAM, but it is strongly recommended to have at least 256 MB RAM.

Alternate CD

The Alternate install CD allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Xubuntu.  It provides for the following situations:

Xubuntu is lighter, and more efficient than Ubuntu (which uses GNOME) or Kubuntu (which uses KDE), since it uses the Xfce Desktop Environment, making it ideal for old or low-end machines, thin-client networks, or for those who would like to get more performance out of their hardware.

Xubuntu is part of the Debian family of distributions.  As such it has an extremely wide selection of software that is instantly available to Xubuntu users.

The graphical installer enables you to get up and running quickly and easily.  Depending on your hardware, a standard installation should take less than 25 minutes - yes, a complete Operating System including applications, in less than 25 minutes!

All the hard work has been done for you.  Once installed your system is immediately ready-to-use.  In addition to OpenOffice.org, the desktop includes a full set of productivity, internet, drawing and graphics applications, and games.   If you wish, you can install any KDE or GNOME application on your Xubuntu desktop system.

There are 2 CDs available, each for a different type of computer:

1. PC (Intel x86)
For almost all PCs.  This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors.  Choose this if you are at all unsure.

2. 64-bit PC (AMD64)
Choose this to take full advantage of computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon, Core 2).  If you have a non-64-bit processor made by AMD, or if you need full support for 32-bit code, use the Intel x86 images instead.
