"Linux on a website aimed specifically at end users?" Ubuntu Linux is here because it is the easiest Linux we have found to install (from only 1 CD).

Desktop CD

Using the Desktop CD you can try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all, and install it permanently later if you wish. This type of CD is what most people will want to use. You will need at least 256MB of RAM and at least 4GB of available hard disk space to install from this CD.

Alternate CD

The Alternate install CD allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Ubuntu. It provides for the following situations:

setting up automated deployments;
upgrading from older installations without network access;
LVM and/or RAID partitioning;
installs on systems with less than about 256MB of RAM (although note that low-memory systems may not be able to run a full desktop environment reasonably).

Server CD

The server install CD allows you to install Ubuntu permanently on a computer for use as a server. It will not install a graphical user interface.

More Information

Ubuntu builds on the latest GNOME operating environment. Despite the silly name, GNOME provides elegant and powerful software for everything from instant messaging to image viewing, from system configuration to Solitaire.

Ubuntu is part of the Debian family of distributions. As such it has an extremely wide selection of software that is instantly available to Ubuntu users.

All the hard work has been done for you. Once Ubuntu is installed, all the basics are in place, including OpenOffice.org and many other programs, so that your system will be immediately usable!

There are 2 CDs available, each for a different type of computer:

1. PC (Intel x86)
For almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors. Choose this if you are at all unsure.

2. 64-bit PC (AMD64)
Choose this to take full advantage of computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon, Core 2). If you have a non-64-bit processor made by AMD, or if you need full support for 32-bit code, use the Intel x86 images instead.

As authorised distributors of Ubuntu CDs we hold some stock of popular Ubuntu editions, produced/pressed by Ubuntu and shipped to us for distribution. When ordering a CD you will see an asterisk (*) next to an "Ubuntu produced CD", all other CDs are produced by us.

Our CDs are professionally produced, high quality and colour printed. They are produced from official Ubuntu CD images. The content of either CD is identical. If we run out of stock of Ubuntu CDs, or around the time of the release of a new version, we may supply CDs produced by us to avoid any delay despatching your order.
